Green

Green

Today was one of my favorite days so far. And that’s saying something ‘cause I had a ROUGH morning (to put it mildly) and was not looking forward to preschool.

All three of my kids are sick with a cold. I started to feel the sore throat this morning. Then I got a phone call that didn’t go all that well, and while I was on the phone, Lucy sneaked out the front door. By the time I realized she was gone and went running after her, she was down at the stop sign at the end of the street.

Meanwhile, both babies were crying because it was nap time for them, preschool was supposed to start in a little over an hour, and I just wanted to go back to bed.

No rest for the weary.

Let’s talk about the FUN part of the day!

Book

I’d originally decided we’d talk about goats and gorrillas today but I was having a hard time finding a book about either one of them (that I actually liked), and while I was looking I came across Green Eggs and Ham.

GREEN! Yes! Let’s talk about the color green!

Another Dr. Seuss book, I know. Seriously though – if you don’t love it, well… the problem probably isn’t the book. 😉

After we were done with the book, I asked them to tell me all of the things they could see in the room that were green. They were finding some that I hadn’t noticed (since I put them there anyway). It was fun!

Flashcards

Today, for flashcards, since I was in a “bit” of a mood, as we went through them I tried to cheer myself up. I asked them for their best bear face. I asked them to show me what it looks like when they take a big bite of an apple. We squeaked like mice and gobbled like turkeys. This was, by far, the most fun we’ve had with the flashcard portion of our lesson. I think we’ll continue doing it.

Song

We sang (what we call) the Rainbow Song today. The first time I heard this song was probably about a year or so ago when my husband started singing it to Lucy. His mom had sung it to him and his sisters when they were kids, but I’d never heard it before. It’s become a family favorite and a staple in our home. We only sing the chorus though, we don’t know all of the verses.

Tracing Page

Both the upper and lower-case Gs are hard ones to master. They’re working on them though and not doing too bad.

I think they’re getting bored with the tracing pages though. It’s almost like pulling teeth. Although, now that I’m writing this and thinking about it some more, we might just need to separate them a little more when we do the tracing pages.

Nixon does really well with the pencil grips. Lucy doesn’t, but she’s pretty good about holding her crayons almost correctly. When one is doing one thing, the other one wants to be doing the same thing. If there were more kids, I think it would be different, but since we’re only working with the two, it might be better if we separated them just a little bit so they’re not so focused on what the other is doing (or not doing). I’m not talking different rooms, just different tables in the same room, or separate ends at a much longer coffee table.

Activity

Today’s activity was a little book I found on Education.com. This time we colored the page before I cut it apart and that seemed to work better than last time (when I’d cut them first).

We’re still working on writing our names too, but the kids are doing really well with it. Look how cute Lucy’s name looks on her book. It’s a little hard to see because she doesn’t have the pressure thing down yet, but I love the way her cute little name looks when she writes it.

All Done!

Even for it being a bit of a rough day, the lesson was great and the kids seemed to respond pretty well to all of the things we did. The flashcard noises and actions are definitely something we’ll be repeating and I’m really happy with how using “green” turned out. I only wish I would have figured that out sooner so we could have had a blue day and a red day back when we did B and R.
