Trees
Trees
Day 2 of the letter T!
We only get two days this week because of the holiday (Labor Day), so we had to make them count.
Book
The Giving Tree has always been one of my most favorite books. It’s a tad bit melancholy but the message has always left me feeling hopeful. The tree thought she gave everything she had – she thought that she had nothing left to give – but every single time he came, the boy got exactly what he needed. That’s a little too deep for two preschoolers, but they loved it too. Lucy even asked me to read it to her again later in the day.
Flashcards
Nothing fantastic to report here but I’m keeping this section on this page anyway – just in case anyone decides to use it as a template. I know I would and then I’d forget to do the flashcards if they weren’t mentioned.
Probably just me…
Song
As soon as I mentioned that it was time for our song, Nixon said “turtle song” and started jumping up and down. Instead of using another song, since Nixon was so excited about the turtle song, we sang that one a few more times today. He loved it.
Then Jared called me later on to ask how it went again because Nix wanted to sing it with his mom. Haha!
Tracing Page
We used this one from Little Dots today. I forgot to get a picture of it though. Oy.
Activity
Lucy got some finger-paints for her first birthday and I’ve been looking for just the right time to break them out and use them. Today was the day!
I got the idea for the hand print trees here.
As it turns out, Nixon doesn’t like his hands to be dirty so getting him to paint with his fingers wasn’t all that fun. Lucy was more interested in mixing the paints together than she was in using just her fingers for the leaves.
But who cares? It was fun! Look at these masterpieces! (The one on the left is Lucy’s; the one on the right is mine. I forgot to get a pic of Nixon’s and Jared’s before they left.)
All Done!
We will definitely be finger-painting again. And I need to let go of my preconceived visions of how these things are going to go. To have expectations of the kids is acceptable (otherwise we have chaos), but they need to be able to express themselves through these activities and play times too. What looks like a tree to Lucy may not look like a tree to me, but who’s to say which one of us is right?
