Letter to Lucy – 10.4.19
Today I learned something from you.
As you and Nixon were playing together, he did something or took something from you or something. You asked him if he wanted to say sorry to you and he said, “No.” So you smiled at him and said, “That’s ok. I’ll just say sorry to myself.” Then you looked down and said, “Sorry Lucy.”
Later on, after Nixon did something else and Jared made him tell us both he was sorry, he came over and said he was sorry to me and gave me a hug. You weren’t paying attention when he tried to tell you he was sorry so he just walked back over to Jared. Jared picked him up and was holding him when you realized that he hadn’t said sorry to you. You asked him again, “Nixon, do you want to say sorry to me?” He’d already done that and wasn’t in the mood to do it again so he just turned his head. You smiled, again, and said, “That’s ok, Nixon. I’ll just say sorry to myself.” Then you looked down and said “Sorry Lucy.” Then you looked at Nixon and said, “Don’t worry Nixon. It’s ok. I still love you.”
Lucy, you are so quick to forgive, even when the other person doesn’t even seem sorry. You love people. We haven’t met anyone you didn’t like or couldn’t make smile.
I love how, on Sundays, when we go to church, you walk around the chapel saying hello to everyone you know. Often you end up sitting with another family, rarely with kids your age. Sometimes you sit with a family who’s youngest kid is already 11. They love having you sit with them. You’ve gone and sat with grandparents who don’t have grandkids nearby. As I sit in the back and watch you with them, I’m always amazed at the joy you bring to others. I have yet to see someone you walk away from not smiling.
You’re so loving and kind. You’re nice to others. You can be dramatic and overwhelming at times, but when I see you do things like that I realize what Jesus meant when he told us to be like little children.
I love you, Lucy.
