Bugs & Butterflies
Bugs & Butterflies
Today was a lot of fun, though I’m pretty sure my brother and I enjoyed it more than the kids did.
Book
We used “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” today. This has been another of Lucy’s favorites for a while and it was perfect to be able to introduce bugs (caterpillar) and butterflies. We talked about different kinds of bugs, which ones they like and which ones they don’t.
Flashcards
Flashcards were just ok today. Nothing spectacular except that they were able to give me many of the same B words that we’d come up with on Wednesday, with the addition of bacon. Pretty sure we were all a little hungry.
Video
I’d originally thought that I was going to be able to learn a bunch of songs and that I would be able to teach them to the kids. Psh! Not only did Nixon not want anything to do with a song, I couldn’t learn them fast enough.
Do you have any idea how difficult it can be to listen to the same song over and over and over again when you know you’re only going to use it once?
Instead of the song, I showed them a video I found that retold the story of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” That went over a lot better than the song would have.
Activity
Today’s activity was the best one so far. We made butterfly sun catchers. I found the idea here, but the link didn’t give me the file for creating the B-shaped butterfly. I’m lucky enough to have a Silhouette Cameo 3 so I went and found a butterfly outline that I liked in their store, paid $0.99 for it, and had my Cameo cut the butterflies out for me.
I’d precut the tissue paper squares. When I was cutting, I thought that one piece of each colored paper would be enough. It was way more than we needed – I had enough squares for a small army to make these things. And, once again, Jared and I enjoyed the activity way more than the kids did.
Just before we started, I set the little container of paper squares on the table and turned around to grab something – literally about a second. I turned back and Nixon had taken the box and dumped half of it onto his butterfly. A giant pile of little tissue paper squares was stuck to the contact paper, but he’d succeeded in getting his done pretty quickly. Ha!
All in all, they turned out pretty cute. It’s definitely a repeat activity.
All Done!
It was only our third day so we were all still trying to get used to things. We had a good time though and the two kids are learning how to play together and learn too.
